With deep sorrow along with joyful hearts we announce the peaceful passing away of our beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother, Carolyn L. McCarvel, of Spanish Fork, Utah, on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at the age of 90 years old.
Born on January 1, 1934, to Clarence Abraham Larsen & Marjorie Frances McComb in Monroe, Utah, she was the youngest of five siblings and was raised in both Monroe and Springville Utah. She was bound and determined to live a long life which came from an early age in her life where her mother passed away at the young age of 43 from ovarian cancer when Carolyn was just 9 years old. Three months later, her second oldest brother passed away unexpectedly at 15 years old from an allergic reaction to medications he was prescribed for scarlet fever. In 1950, her father was tragically killed in a road construction accident in Fallon, Nevada, at the age of 51 when Carolyn was only 16 years old at the time. In 1976, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, underwent surgery, and beat this thing with no chemotherapy or radiation treatments. She was diagnosed again with cancer in 1987-88, the same cancer that had taken her mother’s life years before, underwent surgery and again beat this thing with no chemotherapy or radiation treatments where she was able to live a long and healthy life ever since.
Carolyn graduated from Springville High School in 1952 where she was on the cheerleading squad for the Springville Red Devils. She married Blake T Herbert on December 24, 1952, in Payson, Utah and they made their first home in San Diego, California during the Korean War conflict; they later divorced but had the great opportunity to have three children together.
She held various jobs throughout her life working at a Dry Cleaners in Springville, Wills Foodland in Spanish Fork, Signetics in Orem, and working for Dr. Richard Johnson at his dentist office in Spanish Fork for many years, but she was mostly a homemaker to her family where she loved to bake and sew on the old Singer sewing machine. She held many positions in the Church with Sunday School and Young Womens in her earlier years of life as a mother. She and her older sister, Phyllis, became almost inseparable during their entire lives together.
Carolyn married Roderick James McCarvel on April 15, 1989, in Las Vegas, Nevada. He would always do anything for her along with her children, as long as it made her happy and felt taken care of. They made their home in Sandy, Utah, for many years, then decided to move to Spanish Fork so that she could be closer to her family. They both had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Paris, France, with her daughter, Valerie, and granddaughter, Mallory, on a school outing in the early 2000’s.
She is survived by her three children: Valerie Leetham of Spanish Fork, Utah; Quinn B. Herbert (Alla) of Spanish Fork, Utah; Layne L. Herbert of Mount Vernon, Washington State; stepson, Rod McCarvel Jr. of Seattle, Washington, Renee McCarvel of Salt Lake City, Utah. Also survived by four grandchildren: Danielle and Brandon Olsen of Fountain Green, Utah; Mallory and Haden Larsen of Spanish Fork, Utah; Mija and Mark Bearnson of Salt Lake City, Utah; Nick McCarvel of Seattle, Washington; and six great-grandchildren: Killian Olsen, Aspen Olsen, Willow Olsen, Hazel Olsen, Payton Warner, Charlotte Warner, and one more to be here, due on February 4, 2024, Cora Joan Larsen.
Carolyn is preceded in death by her husband, Roderick James McCarvel; her parents, Clarence Abraham Larsen and Marjorie Frances McComb; brothers: Roderick Paul Larsen, Lynn Bruce Larsen, Mark Enoch Larsen; sister, Jessie Phyllis McQuivey; son-in-law, Reed Curtis Leetham; daughter-in-law, Bobbi Miller; and great-grand-daughter, Londyn Mae Olsen.
You have finally made it Home, Mom, and are now united with other members of your family, whom you have not seen in quite some time. We Love You, Always.
We would like to thank the incredible staff at Utah Valley Hospital, Stonehenge Skilled Nursing Center, Spring Gardens Memory Care Center and iCare Hospice for all your gracious and loving care that was given for Good Old Mom.
