Bonnie Lou Barney Metcalf, 78, of Springville, Utah, passed away on September 13, 2025. Bonnie was born on April 10, 1947, in Provo, Utah, to Beth and Arnold Barney. She was raised in Springville, where she spent her childhood climbing trees to read books, riding horses, and enjoying the outdoors with her siblings and friends. From an early age, Bonnie showed a love for learning including learning to play the organ.
A proud graduate of Springville High School, Class of 1965, Bonnie served as class secretary and was an enthusiastic cheerleader. She made lifelong friends and continued to collect them wherever life took her. After high school, she earned an associate degree from Brigham Young University and became a registered nurse. She loved her time living in Salt Lake near the LDS hospital during school where she was the president of her nursing class.
On July 19, 1968, Bonnie married the love of her life, Sam Metcalf, in the Manti LDS Temple. Their marriage was a beautiful partnership that spanned 57 years. Shortly after being married, Sam was drafted into the army and the couple moved to Fort Lewis, Washington. During his deployment in the Vietnam War, Bonnie returned to Utah, where she gave birth to their first daughter, Meredith. Bonnie’s patriotism and love for liberty deepened as she courageously cared for their baby and supported her husband, who was engaged in sometimes daily and heavy combat. Their family later grew to include their son, Ty, and two more daughters, Jacqueline and Paige. Bonnie loved and supported her family with all her heart.
Bonnie found joy in baking pies, canning produce, and sewing intricate quilts for her loved ones. Professionally, she was an exceptional nurse whose compassion touched the lives of countless patients over her 37-year career. She worked in a variety of medical settings, including ICU, Emergency Room, Labor and Delivery, IV Therapy, Oncology and NICU. She received the Oncology Nurse of the Year Award for the state of Utah. She was instrumental in establishing the Hospice program in Utah County, leaving a lasting legacy of care and service.
A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Bonnie served faithfully in many callings throughout her life, including serving in Relief Society, Young Women, Stake Young Women, and Primary. She especially cherished her time as a Cub Scout leader and at girls camp, where she built lasting connections with youth and leaders alike.
Known affectionately as “Grandma Bonnie,” she was a beloved grandmother to 16 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, who brought her immeasurable joy. She loved her family with fierce loyalty. She brought light and laughter to every situation. Her warmth, kindness, and unwavering support made her a second grandmother to many as she treated everyone like family.
Bonnie is survived by her husband, Sam Metcalf; her children Meredith Metcalf, Ty (Melissa) Metcalf, Jacqueline (Mike) Burks, and Paige (Scott) Paystrup; her 16 grandchildren and their spouses; her 8 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Jeanne Christensen. She was preceded in death by her parents, Beth and Arnold Barney, and her siblings Merrill Barney, Lawrence Barney, Dianne Kreth, and Arna Barney.
