Betty “Samie” Valin June 30, 1944 - April 26, 2026

Betty Carol Metcalf Scallorn Valin, lovingly known as Samie, passed away on April 26, 2026, in Salem, Utah, at the age of 81. She was born on June 30, 1944, in Barton County, Missouri, to William Wallace and Hattie Maude Trent Metcalf, a spirited presence from the very beginning.

Samie’s life carried her across the western states, shaping her into the vibrant, capable, and endlessly creative woman her family and friends cherished. She made homes in Manson, Washington; San Leandro and Manteca, California; Lewiston and Cul‑de‑sac, Idaho; and finally Salem, Utah. Each place added to her story, and she left her mark in every community she touched.

She married Billy George Scallorn in 1962, and later, on December 27, 1986, she married the love of her life, Clifford Valin, in Washoe County, Nevada. Their partnership was full of adventure, laughter, and shared passions.

Determined and hardworking, Samie earned her GED in Tracy, California, and went on to work for the Glass Owen Illinois Company as well as Walmart in Washington. But her true gifts shone brightest in the hobbies she poured her heart into. She was a painter, a beadworker, a cake decorator, a seamstress, a gardener, a photographer, and a woodworker. She loved fishing, camping, hunting, traveling, and even mastered the art of throwing tomahawks and knives. Her hands were always busy, her mind always curious, and her spirit always ready for the next challenge.

Samie was deeply involved with Muzzleloader and Elks groups in Idaho and Washington, where she found friendship, camaraderie, and purpose. Throughout her life she embraced both Baptist and Catholic traditions, carrying her faith with her in quiet, steady ways.

She is survived by her children:

  • Hattie Mae and Alan Leatham, Salem, Utah
  • PansyJean and Travis Fuson, Berryville, Arkansas
  • Betty Carol and Michael Daniels, Denison, Texas
  • Rock Clifford and Syndi Valin, Sanger, California
  • William George and Rhonda Scallorn, Cul‑de‑sac, Idaho

She leaves behind a remarkable legacy of 32 grandchildren, 53 great‑grandchildren, and 13 great‑great‑grandchildren, each one a testament to the love and strength she carried through her life.

Samie is also survived by her siblings George W. and DeAnna Metcalf, Jerry W. Metcalf, and Wanda Sue Metcalf.

She is preceded in death by her parents William W. Metcalf and Hattie M. Metcalf; her husband, Clifford Valin; her child Billiejo Scallorn; siblings Robert Metcalf, Georgia and John Jensen, Howard Metcalf, Elizabeth Metcalf; and loved ones Kevin Jensen, Lloyd Jensen, Zerek W. Jetton, and Terry Cripe.

Samie lived boldly, loved fiercely, and created beauty everywhere she went. Her family will remember her as a woman of grit, humor, talent, and heart—a mother, sister, wife, grandmother, and friend whose presence made life richer.

Her legacy lives on in the countless things she crafted, the stories she told, the skills she passed down, and the generations who will carry her memory forward.

A visitation will be held in her honor on Wednesday, May 6, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home located at 187 South Main St., Spanish Fork, Utah.
