Our beloved and exemplary 93-year-old mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother Belén Rozo passed away in the afternoon of March 23, 2023 at a hospital in Provo, Utah, United States. She was born on August 9, 1929 in Bogota, Colombia. Daughter of Maria de los Ángeles Rozo and Pedro Pablo Bautista Gaona.
Belén was preceded in death by her daughter Elizabeth Bernal, her grandson Mauricio Orjuela, her son Fabio, 4 newborn grandchildren, her parents and siblings. She is survived by her sons and daughters, Aura Stella, Luz Martha, Maria Elsa, Luis Fernando, Gerardo, Edith Consuelo, Gloria Belen, Sonia Janeth, and Patty. She is also survived by 30 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren.
Belén and Luis Alfredo Bernal Neira formed a home and had 11 children. Years later, Belén became a single mother and with determination, audacity and courage, she dedicated her life to support and lead her 10 children with love and firmness. Always resourceful, she was not afraid of hard work and challenging jobs. Among many of them we remember the story of the construction of her own home in Villavicencio, crocheting, making cakes, cooking meals along with many other ingenious and difficult jobs to feed and raise her children. She had a special talent for beautifying the home and making it shine.
Always a woman of incomparable faith, seeking spirituality, she came to know her honored and beloved missionaries Elder Eby and Elder Ostergard. Soon after, she became a pioneering member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Villavicencio. This faith made it possible for her to immigrate to the United States in 1990, where most of her family is now settled. She did not leave her bed without giving thanks in prayer and possessed a constant desire to follow the guidance of Heavenly Father. She took every opportunity to testify of the love of our Savior Jesus Christ and to voice with a thankful heart the infinite blessings she received. She brought happiness into our lives with her singing and her spiritual joy.
She loved her Llanero culture, dancing, basketball, and was a “tejo” champion. The principles of honesty and integrity were values that she instilled in everyone around her. And with her impeccable appearance until her last days, she has left high standards that are perhaps difficult to achieve. As the matriarch of a large family, known affectionately as “Tita” by her many grand and great-grandchildren, she was unique in many ways of living; a short woman who surpassed many with her physical and spiritual strength. Belén lived what she taught, often saying: “that who desires it, can obtain it. And if you are willing you can achieve it.” With that determination, hope and faith, as a mother she not only blessed and continues to bless the life of her 10 beloved children, but also multiple generations. This tribute is not enough to describe her and the opportunities in life that she created for us; the generations that with so much effort and love she built.
We will honor her life and legacy Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 585 North Main Street, Spanish Fork, Utah. Viewing: 9:00 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Gravesite Service: 1:00 p.m. at Spanish Fork City Cemetery, 420 South 400 East, Spanish Fork, Utah 84660 USA
