Our spunky, funny, loving mother, grandmother, wife and friend Anna Lucille Andrus Kempton passed away Saturday morning July 24, 2021, at her home surrounded by loved ones. Anna was born November 11, 1929, to Jacob G. and Phoebe Andrus, in Spanish Fork, Utah. She lived there all her life, and loved her little town. She was a woman of many talents. While attending Spanish Fork High School, she played on the tennis team, was head cheerleader, played the drums in the school band, and was involved in everything drama. She won awards for her readings and starred in many school productions. She continued to hone those talents throughout her life, writing and directing roadshows and plays as ward and stake drama director.
Her talents were not limited to drama; she could also sing, direct choirs, and even learned how to play the harmonica at age 89! She was a talented sketch artist and oil painter. As she helped her children with their music lessons, she taught herself to play the piano and blessed the lives of several grandchildren and other members of her ward by teaching them to play the piano. She wouldn’t take any money for the lessons; she taught them because she loved music and she loved them. She told them all that they had “piano fingers”. She made quilts for every grandchild when they married. Some of those were sewn while she was going through chemotherapy. She was a breast cancer survivor who didn’t give up on life.
She married Don J Kempton, June 1, 1948, and together they had five children whom she loved fiercely and without reservation: Patricia Ann, Craig Don, Kathy LaRee, Brian J, and Scott Andrus. Their eternal union has produced 13 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Anna and Don served three full-time missions: Papua New Guinea, Bristol England, and Nauvoo Illinois; plus two service missions. Anna taught Sunday School at the County Jail, and held many other callings. All were given her very best effort. They were filled both with a love for people and for service.
Anna lost her sweetheart, Don, in 2003, but refused to give up on life. She remained active at church and with the Spanish Fork Senior Citizens group. She was choir director and general champion of people. She always watched to see if someone was alone and might need a friend. At the age of 83, after being a widow for nine years, she reconnected with a high school sweetheart, LaMark Wignall, at the Senior Center. They had a whirlwind courtship and were married April 6, 2012. ‘Annie’ and Mark have sung together, laughed together and taken care of each other. Mark is loved by Anna’s whole family.
Anna is survived by her husband, Mark Wignall; and four of her five children: Patricia Ann (David) Terry, Craig Don (Charlotte) Kempton, Kathy LaRee (Don) Jex, Brian J (Jennifer) Kempton; and daughter-in-law, Kim (Scott Andrus) Kempton. Anna was preceded in death by her first husband, Don J Kempton; and her youngest son, Scott. She will be missed.
There will be a viewing held Wednesday evening, July 28, 2021, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home, 187 South Main Street, Spanish Fork, Utah. A second viewing, at the Spanish Fork 10th Ward church building, 353 East 400 North, Spanish Fork, will be Thursday morning, July 29, 2021, beginning at 9:45 a.m. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the church. August 14, 2021 at 1:47 amKathy, you may remember me as Shelley Sanford. I remember your mom well from my youth and saw her at the hairdressers once in a while. She spoke of you with so much love and pride. I know you will miss her fiercely.
