Alvin Martin Otte, 81, of Salt Lake City, Utah, passed away in his sleep October 1, 2020.
Al was born in Brownwood, Texas. He spent most of his early life in Odessa, Texas, before serving for two years as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Northwestern States Mission. He subsequently attended Brigham Young University, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education.
He was married to Augusta Lou Jordan on September 14, 1961, in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They were married for fifty-nine years.
Al worked for many years as a junior high and high school math teacher, where many generations of students in multiple states learned his methods of doing complex problems without paper, pencil, or calculator. He eventually worked as a security training specialist for Texas Utilities Electric at the Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant, until he retired in 1995.
An avid lover of the Scriptures, especially the Old Testament, Al taught himself to read Hebrew and Greek, in order to gain a better understanding as he studied. A life-long learner, he seemed interested in most everything. He read constantly and passed on the love of learning to his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Lou; children: Marc (Victoria), Julie, William, and Paul (Becky); grandchildren: Benjamin (Annie), Catelyn, Daniel (Amy), Hans, Liesl, Gabrielle, Ky and Elizabeth; and great-grandchildren: Jack, Thomas, Cameron, Daniel, and Everett. He is preceded in death by his parents, Odis, and Nora Lee; a son, John; and a grandson, Jacob.
