Alice Provost Harrison passed peacefully on November 22, 2022, surrounded by her husband, Johnny, sister Luella and her grand-daughters as she had always wanted. She struggled with multiple health problems and is finally free from pain and suffering.
Alice was born in Oregon, the youngest of four children. At a young age they moved to Utah where Alice attended school and graduated from American Fork High School.
Later, she was one of the first women to work at Geneva Steel as an electrician to support her young family. Alice jumped on the opportunity to attend Stevens Henagar College and graduated in accounting.
Eventually, she took a job at Brigham Young University where she worked in the Admissions Department specializing in discontinuance. This was her dream job! She thoroughly enjoyed her co-workers, the culture and helping students. Her job required a lot of “out of the box” type thinking which Alice was stellar at!
She and Johnny were married in 1983. Making it through a combined total of six kids, that were all in their teenage years at that time, was nothing short of a miracle. The stories of things that happened in their lives are countless! Shortly after marriage, they purchased Johnny’s Drive Up where numerous employees became family friends. Johnny’s was known for having the best fountain drinks. (Johnny says it was because they cleaned each nozzle every night.)
Alice retired from BYU after 17 years to be home with Johnny. They sold the store and their home in 2015 and moved to St George. Right up until her passing, she loved the sunshine and warm weather. She was often heard saying “all I need is my little house and my big husband… and my dog!”
Alice’s personality could be described as a happy, bouncy dodge ball being thrown through life, leaving silly cheerfullness and a care free attitude without boundaries. She loved to talk, tell stories, make up new words and have fun. She admittedly hated cooking but did her best with Tuna casserole (minus the tuna) and what is affectionately called “rate-a-meal” where she would try a new recipe from the latest Home & Garden magazine. Then, all eaters would rate weather to make it again or not.
Alice was a self proclaimed “clothes whore” who absolutely loved fashion! Shopping for clothes was her favorite pass time whether in person, online or magazine. The colors & patterns, feel of the fabric, accessories and quality were mesmerizing to her. Wearing bold jewelry and getting her hair just right was what made it all come together. Occasionally, she would spend days planning what she was going to wear to a certain event. Her closet and bedroom were always in a state of “looking like a bomb went off!”
Creating new things and crafting was her preferred pass time. She took a class on basket weaving at BYU, learned how to make jewelry, painted with tole paints, was self taught on Adobe Photoshop and made digital scrapbook pages. She collected cook books and most recently took up punch needle and needle point sewing.
Alice had the best “whore house luck” ‘cause “everyone is lucky in a whore house” she would say. While Johnny would be strategically calculating his next move in a card game or meticulously planning his golf shot she would approach all competition effortlessly and breeze through hap-hazardly usually winning to Johnny’s chagrin.
She had a soft spot for animals, especially dogs. Throughout their marriage she and Johnny had a dog. Ernie (a short haired dachshund) was the most well know. She enjoyed his funny personality and intelligence. She would laugh out loud as Johnny would say “getta goin’” to get him to run up the makeshift ramp and slide down on the kids’ playhouse in the backyard.
Throughout her life Alice has touched, taught and influenced countless people in a way that made each life better. Her humor, kindness, beauty and sass will be missed by all.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, November 26, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. located at the Spanish Fork Cemetery, 420 South 400 East, Spanish Fork, Utah. Family and friends may attend a visitation prior to the graveside at 1:00 p.m. located at Walker Funeral Home, 187 South Main Street, Spanish Fork, Utah.
