On June 17th, 2021, Alice Ione Snare Hughes departed this life and joined her beloved husband Dean in the peace and joy of paradise. After 90 years of devoted love and service to her family, friends, and anyone who needed help, she has earned her rest, although it’s certain that she found something to do as soon as she arrived on the other side.
Besides her husband Dean, she has surely been celebrating with those who preceded her into this next realm of existence: parents Florence and Charles; siblings Frank, his wife Bonnie, Judd, and his wife Janice; and children Bill, Sandra, David, and sons-in-law Lee Kiefer, and Tim Densford, as well as all those other family members and friends who have been looking forward to this reunion.
Alice, also known as Cookie, was born on October 13th, 1930 in Florissant, Colorado. As a child she lived happily in the Colorado mountains with her parents and three brothers Frank, Judd, and Albert. Shortly after the end of WWII, she met a handsome returned soldier at a dance at the Grange Hall in Cripple Creek, Colorado. Although she didn’t know it that night, he would be the love of her life, and she his. At the ripe old age of 16 she married him. Mrs. Dean Hughes then immediately embarked on a life full of children, horses, and occasional craziness (usually the good kind).
She quickly became an expert at motherhood, having five children by the time she was 28: William (Bill), Sandra, James (Jim), Cynthia (Cindy), and David. And although she thought she was done, she evened up the girls and boys by adding Sheri nine years later. Alice was devoted to her family, and her devotion didn’t end when she stopped washing their diapers, getting up early every morning to make sure they had a “good” breakfast, and waiting up for them to come home from wherever they’d gone, no matter how late. Growing up and moving out didn’t change a thing—she just mothered from a distance, always ready to provide exactly the right help, guidance, and advice needed. Besides her six children she has 21 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren (so far). And she was as expert a Grandma as she was a mom. All will mourn their loss, but also treasure her memories and the lessons she taught them, directly and by example.
Through their 61 years of marriage, Alice and Dean called many places home—Victor and Elkton, Colorado; Green River, Utah; Orangevale, Tuolumne, and Sonora, California; and then back to Utah, Roosevelt and finally Spanish Fork. But wherever she moved, people recognized that an angel had landed among them, and their lives were blessed through knowing her.
In Green River Utah, she was introduced to and became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She faithfully served in many capacities in the congregations (wards) she was part of, and she made devotion to God the center of her life. Her Christ-like service was an inspiration to everyone her life touched.
She is survived by her brother Albert Snare and her children: Bill’s wife Sarah, Jim and his wife Laura, Cindy Densford, Sheri and her husband Dean Wride.
There will be a viewing at the East Meadows Church building (1552 East 750 South, Spanish Fork, UT) on Wednesday, 23 June 2021, at 10AM, followed by a service in her honor at 11AM. Alice will return to where it all began and be laid to rest next to her sweetheart, Dean, in the Victor Colorado cemetery on Saturday, 26 June 2021.
We love you Mom and look forward to seeing you again.
