Alfred Rue Reynolds, 74, passed away January 15, 2023 due to complications from COPD. He was surrounded by loved ones. Alfred was born June 25, 1948, in American Fork Utah. He was raised by his mother, Mary Jane Windley Reynolds and her husband, Dale Reynolds, who adopted Alfred.
Alfred grew up in Payson, Utah, and attended Peteetneet School, and Payson High School, graduating in 1966. Alfred, like any little brother, thought the world of his older brother, Bobby, and always looked up to him. Even in his final days, he lit up when his mother and older brother visited him in the hospital. Alfred was also very close to his younger siblings, Ed and Vicki.
In high school, Alfred began dating the love of his life, Mary Thomas, and they were married October 27, 1967.
Soon after, Alfred was drafted into the United States Army. Alfred then shipped off to Fort Lewis, Washington for basic training. Alfred served in the Army from 1967 to 1973 and fought bravely for our country in Vietnam from April 1968 to June 1969. While in Vietnam, Alfred went beyond the call of duty and was awarded the nation’s third highest award a soldier can receive, the Silver Star, as well as two Bronze Stars, all for valor in battle. He also received three Purple Hearts, and a Vietnam Gallantry Cross from the Republic of Vietnam, among many others, making him one of the most highly decorated soldiers in the State of Utah from the Vietnam conflict. You would never know from his humility that he had accomplished any of this.
After returning home from Vietnam, Alfred worked at the Burgin Mine and attended Utah Trade Tech, where he received an associate degree in the science of welding. He then worked as a maintenance man and welder at Heckett Engineers from 1973 until he had to medically retire in 2001.
Alfred never let retirement slow him down; he could be found anywhere his children or grandchildren were, always supporting them. He lived for his family and was very protective of them, even in his final moments. He was concerned for them over himself, he was their rock. If Alfred wasn’t with his family, he was either teasing someone and making them laugh, watching court shows on television, or talking on the computer with his recently connected brothers from Mike platoon, D company 1/2 1st infantry as he would say. He looked forward to speaking with them as much as possible.
Alfred and Mary had three children (two daughters and a son): Meredith, Danyelle, and Jory Reynolds. He is survived by his daughters, Meredith (Ralph) Garcia and Danyelle Reynolds. Alfred also raised and is survived by one of his grandsons, Dustin (Maegan) Harward and loved him as a son. Alfred is also survived by his mother, Mary Jane Reynolds, and a son-in-law that he treated as his own son, and an additional seven grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary; and his son, Jory. He will be deeply missed by many friends and family.
A visitation will be held Thursday evening, January 19, 2023, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home, 587 South 100 West, Payson, Utah 84651. January 17, 2023 at 8:29 pm“MY Alfie”, (as I always called him), was one of the most best friends I have ever been blessed with in my life. We met when I worked at Flying J in Payson where he would come religiously every evening at 6:00, to have coffee and congregate with his buddies, ALWAYS having fun and leaving us waitresses much happier, and usually making us blush! Alfred and I became very good friends for a lot of years. I was honored to call him my best friend. He did so much for me and was always, always there for me to talk to about anything without ever passing judgment. Always giving me good advice, even if I didn’t want to hear it!! But he was always right! I will miss him so very, very much. I do believe he was truly an angel here on earth. So very humble with integrity that knew no end. Anyone who had the chance to know him was very fortunate. He always made me, and I’m sure many others, want to be a better person. I will miss you my Alfie and I know you’re at rest in God’s arms now in paradise, no longer in pain. I truly loved you my friend.

January 17, 2023 at 11:47 pmI served with Al in Vietnam. I was a Rifle Squad Leader and he was an M60 machine gunner in the Weapons Squad. He was always a great soldier. He had a sassy sense of humor and was a fierce warrior under fire – no one ever questioned his dedication and courage. And those attributes saved many American lives and earned him the recognition he received. For the last few years, seven of us survivors of our platoon in that conflict have connected monthly for a video chat. Al always made us laugh with his stories and his sharp memory about our experiences in Vietnam. He will be sorely missed at these gatherings but ever-present with us all in spirit. I’m confident we will meet again at a rendezvous point in the hereafter and take up our conversation just where we left off. God Speed, AL. Save me some C-rations and Bom de Bom (33)!

January 20, 2023 at 3:38 pmThank you for sharing this. I read it to his mom, my Aunt Mary, on Wednesday – she shared with me how much he loved keeping in touch with all of you! I will add your condolences to his FamilySearch.org Memories page this week. (Now that Alfred has joined all the ‘soldier’s’ in the ‘army of angels’ if you, or your remaining 5 brothers would like to record any stories/histories, I would be willing to help.)

January 20, 2023 at 5:05 pmI have one humorous story that could be titled, “The time Al almost accidentally killed me!'” And another about “Al stealing my R&R to Hawaii”. Al was actually innocent in both stories. You can reach me at:
