July 1, 1955 – September 25, 2020
Alan Wayne Ehlert, of Spanish Fork, Utah, slipped away from his mortal body, surrounded by his family, in the early morning hours of September 25, 2020. He was 65. Born July 1, 1955, in Moses Lake, Washington, to Victor and Elodie Ehlert, he was the sixth child of eight.
When Alan was six, the family moved from Moses Lake, Washington, to Warden, Washington, where he grew up on a large family farm. Here he learned the meaning of hard work, ingenuity, perseverance, and the joy of a job well done! He was a man of all trades; he could repair and fix practically anything! He loved playing all kinds of sports with his five brothers and two sisters. He attended school in Warden for 11½ years. His senior year, the family sold the farm and moved to Spokane, Washington, where he graduated from Central Valley High School.
Alan served a two-year mission in the Colorado Denver Mission. After his mission, he attended college at Brigham Young University, got married, then finished his associate degree at Utah Valley Community College in Computer Science.
In 1978, Alan met Sara Cox at his sister’s and brother-in-law’s (Liz and Larry Christensen) LDS ward in Shelley, Idaho, while he was visiting them for Christmas. Sara was home for the holidays from Rick’s College. They dated four years before getting married in the Idaho Falls, Idaho LDS Temple on April 23, 1982. They were blessed with three beautiful children: Sheena, Bryce, and Cameron. They made their home in Provo, Utah, for 13 years, then moved to Spanish Fork, Utah.
Alan worked many jobs in his life, but the job that supported the family for over 22 years was working for Novell, as a software support engineer. This job took him to many places. He lived and commuted for one year from Sacramento, California, to Utah. For four years, Alan and his wife lived in the Netherlands, then for three months in the Czech Republic. As the saying goes, “There is no place like home!” They missed their children and grandchild so much, they moved back to Spanish Fork.
Alan loved reading, listening to music, learning new things, sports, watching sports, reading about sports, outdoors, traveling, listening to books on CD’s, camping, “farming” his 20 acres at Deer Springs Ranch in southern Utah, and vacationing. His passion was golf!
Mostly though, he loved his family and adored his five grandchildren!
Alan had just retired and was starting to live his dream, when he was diagnosed with brain cancer, Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma (CNS), on February 10, 2020. He was a soldier! He fought with courage, strength, and determination. The cancer wreaked havoc on his brain and the chemo ate at his body. We would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Huntsman Cancer Center for taking good care of this wonderful strong man!
Alan leaves behind his wife of 38 years, Sara; one daughter, Sheena (Lonnie) Tew; one son, Cameron; five grandchildren: Logan, Savannah, Bradley, Justin, Abby; five brothers: Richard (Kathy), Keith, Dennis, Don (Debbie), Mike (Eva); and two sisters, Vicki (Ron) Mason, and Liz (Larry) Christensen. He was preceded in death by one son, Bryce; his parents, Victor and Elodie; and his father-in-law, Orville C. Cox.
Graveside services will be September 29, 2020, at 11:30 a.m., Coalville Cemetery, 175 Industrial Park Road, Coalville, Utah 84017. Friends and family are welcome to attend. — Please bring your own chair.
