Kay Peterson Hemmert (Hales), beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2025, at the age of 83. A lifelong nurturer, artist, and community servant, Kay’s vibrant spirit touched everyone who had the joy of knowing her.
Born on March 11, 1942, Kay was a proud student at Spanish Fork High School. She carried the spirit of her small-town upbringing throughout a life rich in experience and heartfelt service. Her career path was as diverse as it was meaningful – whether she was serving customers at the Skyview Cafe nestled in Spanish Fork Canyon, working at Mountain Bell, or contributing to the fast-paced world of the semiconductor industry, Kay brought unwavering dedication to every role. Yet, it was in Evans City, Pennsylvania, where she truly flourished. There, she owned and operated Afternoon at Anna’s, a delightful tea room where she crafted original recipes, hosted magical tea parties, and transformed hospitality into a true art form.
Throughout her life, Kay lived in many places across the country, always bringing warmth and beauty to every home she created. Eventually, she returned to her cherished hometown of Spanish Fork, Utah, where she continued to make lasting memories and deepen lifelong friendships. Known affectionately as “Mama Kay,” she welcomed everyone with an open heart and an open door. Her children’s friends became her own, drawn in by her boundless love and generosity.
Kay lived a life full of grace, creativity, and compassion. Her gift as a seamstress and artist were more than just creations, they were expressions of her soul. She infused her creativity into every endeavor. Whether meticulously hand crafting whimsical “Woodland Santa’s”, designing exquisite bridal gowns for dolls, sewing breathtaking quilts, crocheting delicate treasures, painting charming tole art, or beautifully decorating spaces with elegance and flair – her hands were never idle, and her creations always radiated joy. Christmas was her favorite time of year, and she made the season magical for everyone around her. Her home would transform into a wonderland of lights, laughter, and love, where traditions were cherished and memories made.
Kay cherished the deep bonds she shared with her close-knit “Club” group of friends and found immense joy in their enduring sisterhood. A pillar of her community, she was actively involved in organizations such as the Jaycees and Utah Association of Women (UAW). Her life was guided by faith, and she served with devotion in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Whether organizing unforgettable events and camps as Young Women’s President, teaching in Primary, leading as Relief Society President, or ministering with quiet compassion, Kay embraced every calling with grace, humility, and a loving heart.
Her greatest masterpiece was the family she built. She was the heart of every gathering, the keeper of traditions, and the source of endless encouragement. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren carry forward her legacy of kindness, resilience, and joy. She is survived by her loving children: Deborah (Jim) Keys, Michelle (Troye) Hamilton, Shawn Hales, Gina (Jim) Anderson, and Jared (Anita) Hales; 16 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by her parents, Doyle H. and Virginia Davis Peterson; her brother, Phillip Peterson; her sister, Karen Peterson; and her first husband, Carl Hales.
Kay Hemmert’s life was a beautiful tapestry woven with service, creativity, and unconditional love. She leaves behind a legacy rooted in kindness, craftsmanship, faith, and unwavering devotion to those she loved, that will echo throughout generations. Though she will be deeply missed, she will forever be remembered with her spirit living in all the lives she touched.
