Dear Mom,
You were anything but ordinary, an “obituary” would never cut it, so this is my way of telling your story. I will leave out the formalities in this letter, and cherish the times I had with you. Tim and I had an interesting childhood, one of many laughs, I was never raised to be a “girly girl”, you taught me to never be afraid to get dirty, you always said “it washes” snakes, lizards, frogs, bugs, and tarantulas were fun, never fearful. We often kept them as pets! You are the reason I adore animals. We never cried over spilled milk, you were quick to fix boo boos with your nursing wisdom. You were a true hippy at heart, as teenagers, you were open and honest about sex, drugs, and alcohol. Many of our friends came to you for advice, you were a favorite mom among our circle of friends. You were a hard worker, and did all you could for us kids. As a nurse of nearly 40yrs, you taught me to be a compassionate person, taught me that ALL life is precious and mattered. You are Neil Diamond’s biggest fan, Tim and I grew up listening to Neil Diamond, John Denver, Barry Manilow, Barbra Streisand, and Anne Murray, in that order. I remember driving down the road in your Audi singing our hearts out, as you “danced” the car. I remember how Tim made you wet your pants laughing so hard with his antics. Remember when we made a wrong turn in your Chevette and ended up in the parade route? How we waved and acted like we were meant to be there! You gave me my love of Mexican food, and you especially adored refried beans. All my kids share that love as well! You and I loved watching The Jazz Singer, Out of Africa, Thornbirds, and all the Mel Brooks movies, Naked Gun series, just the greatest. You could resite the lines to Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles, forwards/backwards and upside down, as can both Tim and I, you made sure of that! You and I were always watching National Geographic and nature shows, we love that. You always took time to smell the flowers, we had a blast on our adventures. I remember leaving my baby shower as I was in labor with Matthew, and we still went shopping at Walmart to buy more flowers for my porch, then off to Sizzler to eat AGAIN before heading to the hospital. I remember the joy on your face when he was born with a full head of red hair, oh how proud you were of that! I remember being pregnant with Nathan, who we were told was a girl, (ya right!) and walking all the way to downtown Provo to get my labor started, and having to call Kurtis to come pick us up because we were too tired to walk all the way home. I remember the surprise when Nathan turned out not to be a girl! How we LAUGHED our hearts out! I remember Darold having the boys “help him” build things when they were little. How you and Jacob used to catch grasshoppers. And how you and Jacob would eat tomatoes fresh off the vine, no rinse needed. He got his love of coffee and tea from you. Daniel remembers you singing “You are my sunshine” to him. He was so excited when he found that singing Mothers Day card for you. I remember eating so many cherries and peaches we got sick. But kept on eating. You were so amazingly happy when I became a grandma too, I now understand what true love is, having my beloved Everett. You loved the rain, and the cold, as it was always time to make soup. Jacob got that love from you. It was fitting that you chose to go during a storm. Mom, you left such a huge hole in our hearts when you left, we are forever changed, and miss you beyond words. I hope that when my day comes to see you again, I can go out surrounded by ALL my family and loved ones as you did, throughout the day, all your kids, grandkids, and great grandkids, as well as several dear friends came to tell you goodbye, you made your exit 10 minutes after Kyler arrived, the last of your grandkids to come, you waited for him, you did it your way, as always. What a wonderful tribute to you, you are so loved! As you lay there in the hospital bed, your last hours with us, it was amazing to me how I remembered every single word to all the Neil Diamond songs as I sang to them to you. I now struggle to breathe without you, my heart physically hurts without you, I am trying to keep it together and stay strong, I cry in the car alot. You are not gone completely, we still feel you with us, you were always the last to leave the party, and so we know you have to stick around awhile, it gives me comfort to know that. Thank you for the double rainbow, I know you love us all, as we love you. Life is short, and precious. I look forward to being reunited with you again. Love, Missy
Dear Mom,
Thank you for teaching me to laugh through the hard times, to love beyond words, and that this too, shall pass. Because of you, I learned the importance of living each day to it’s fullest and to always have a little Neil Diamond in my life. The memories you made with me, my wife and grandchildren will help us to heal from this profound loss.
I will always love you Mom, Love Tim
Hey Lady!
I promised to help you overcome some pain, shame, and regret. I tried to teach you forgiveness, and grace. I am not quite sure what you learned, but I know exactly what you taught me. Today I know how to let go of pain, shame and regret. I can forgive an walk with grace. I know that every moment holds meaningful experiences that are priceless. Thank you for giving me the ability to slow down and see. My eyes and heart are forever changed by you. Love, Jennifer
